Children’s Books for Adults
Though it’s a fact most don’t know about me, I collect old children’s books. I’ve got shelves full of them and to this day I still can’t walk past an old book store without walking in, heading straight for their children’s section and looking for ‘The Little Prince’ or ‘Alice in Wonderland’. And while it may seem strange to some people, for me, children’s books made more of an impact on my life and the way I view the world than any adult book ever has.
But I’m not talking about little kid’s picture books (although ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ and Dr. Seuss’ books are some exceptions), I’m talking about true blue literature, well written and beautifully bound. The sort of stuff that was published before writer’s coddled children’s minds or ever once thought about abstinent Vampire lovers as a viable literature category in and of itself. These books like ‘The Little Prince’, ‘The Skin Horse’, ‘The Wizard of Oz’ and ‘Alice in Wonderland’ were full of incredible anecdotes on loneliness, love, adventure and life, words that still ring true and affect me to this day.
And while some of these books are out of print or hard to find, most of them are readily available. For those of you who haven’t picked them up in a while, do so again. You’ll find they are just as relevant today as they ever were.
As for the rest of you, those who don’t wish to go rummaging in the bookshop basements, or scavenging through Amazon’s archives, I’ll post some of the most important passages here. I hope they impact you just as much if not more than they impacted me.
