A second try.
I’ve realized something about myself today, something I wouldn’t have thought true until the proof presented itself: I am most prone to creating, retrying or redesigning tumblr when I’m feeling the most alone.
Today is one of those days.
Los Angeles is a lonely town.
I know how cliche that may sound, and to be fair, no one is totally alone in this world, but it is true. Even surrounded by people as you so often are here, it feels as though there are no tethers or ties, no sacred truths that would keep a friendship afloat through anything. The company you keep is so often hinged on how entertained you keep them that it’s not uncommon to watch friendship’s disintegrate around you as they trade for something more appealing.
It’s not an absolute truth however.
I have an incredible, luminous mother, and a loving dog Alf who never leaves my side. Perhaps he is the best opposition to my argument for day to day loneliness yet… but then, his conversation skills are somewhat lacking.
And I do have friends. Bright, effervescent friends.
But there’s something about the friendships of your 20’s that seems even more tumultuous than the angst-ridden, loner teen years passed. Everyone is in flux in this decade, from the early 20’s kids, still shiny, stubborn and naive, to the late 20’s friends who are fighting tooth and nail against their 30’s even as they worry they’re playing catch up (gotta find the spouse, the house, the kids…). So you see then why, with so many personal growing pains, some friendships will inevitably fall to the wayside.
You become busy. You grow apart. You lose touch.
It’s no ones fault.
But then some days, like today, when your brain is foggy but the sky is blue…and you’ve slept in too late and still haven’t missed anything….
and your friends are all off doing their busy friend things… you realize:
The world keeps on spinning. It spun before you were on it. It spun while you and your friends were drunk that night. It spun at that funeral you cried at. It spun while you were sleeping.
It didn’t just stop spinning because you felt alone.
Maybe that’s what your 20’s are for… realizing that the world doesn’t revolve around you.
